12 year-old charged with felony hate crime...
Staten Island, NY. - 12 year-old Osman Daramy, a student at Berta Dreyfus Intermediate School, has just been charged with a vicious hate crime. The young man, and a 13 year-old girl, assaulted an eighth grade female behind the school on Tuesday.
As they beat her, he screamed, “Are you a Muslim?” and tried to forcefully take of her hijab. (Head covering traditionally worn by Muslim women)
The young lady collapsed during the attack, but was able to call her brother during the incident. Her brother ended up calling the police to notify them of the cruel assault.
Officers from NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force are doing a thorough investigation. The young male was taken to the Spofford Juvenile Center, and is set to go before Family Court.
This young man has a history of delinquent behavior. He’s harassed, verbally and physically, the young girl on numerous occasions prior to this incident. Teachers claim that he “…terrorizes staff and students.”
Monday he cut a girls hair with scissors, and wielded the scissors around class. He was expelled, instead he was sent to in-school suspension. On another occasion, he was present during a robbery that took place at the school. Students robbed a pizza delivery guy, that was delivering food to an after school program. School safety agents have also been called into class, because of his disruptive behavior.
There have been other incidents that have happened on campus that have left school officials afraid for their safety. In the past few weeks, students have assaulted a couple of the teachers.
Teachers scrutinize the school, for not handing down harsh enough punishments to students, and not reporting incidents properly.
The young man’s father says that he’s the victim. He explained to reporters that his son is also a Muslim. He wonders how a child of the same religion, be charged in a “hate crime” against someone in that same religion.
Just recently, he purchased a ticket for the young man to go to Sierra Leone to live with relatives. He says that school officials have asked him when he is leaving on numerous occasions. The young man faces felony charges.
2 questions:
1.As it relates to your school, do you think students should receive harsher punishments for delinquent conduct in school?
- 2.Do you think the young man should be charged with a hate crime, even when he practices the same religion?
